Editing Leadership & Team Building

Editing stories
During cycles, myself and peer-opinion editors Jack Block and Rosstin Pouradib edit opinion stories. We divide workloads equally to check in on certain writers, edit stories and make sure that writers are completing their stories to the highest quality on due dates. (Pictured left) I try to leave edits that give credit to writers, while also maintaining constructive criticism so writers can make their stories better.
The bark uses a high quality editing process...
that incorporates five different phases of news-editing and publication. Our process begins with pre-cycle brainstorming, mid-cycle editing, sketch out planning for print, pasting up pages and a post mortem discussion on what went well and what didn't.
Team building

Cian was super helpful and very easy to work with. He helped me out a ton with Genially while we were working together, which I had never used before, and was very easy to get in contact with to make the best possible designs.

Reed Grossman, Sports Editor

Cian Kelly isn’t just a journalist. He’s not just an opinion editor. He’s a friend, a collaborator and a hard worker...

Leyton Defesche, Copy Editor
Cian and I have collaborated on a lot of projects and he always had clear communication and was very productive which made it really easy to work with him
Cub statments
It’s easy to say I wouldn’t have made it through the Cub Bark paste-up process without Cian’s help every step of the way. Not only did he go above and beyond with his time and effort into the chaotic process of producing our Cub Bark, but he was always happy to be there and eager to help. He never made me feel like my confusion and questions were a burden, and he remained an available and positive presence in the hectic situation of helping three cubbies alone navigate something we had no experience in. When we had little to no Barks and Bites to work with, he brainstormed alongside the opinion eds until we figured them out together. Outside of the paste-up process, Cian was supportive beyond requirements: helping me learn how to edit others’ stories in the most effective ways, uploading stories to web, and consistently being a dependable person I could go to for any Bark advice.

Ada Healy, Cub Reporter/Opinion Editor

Sidney Bank, Cub Reporter/Opinion Editor
Cian was super helpful during the Cub Edition for Ada, Liv, and I as he always took the time to answer our questions whenever we needed support. He was especially skilled with the InDesign software, teaching me useful shortcuts and helping me better understand the program. He also helped me solve layout challenges, including text wrap issues and making sure my pages were formatted correctly. Thanks to his guidance and leadership, I was able to finish my layout page early, and I believe he would be super valuable to the Bark next year.

Class presentations

As an editor...
I present every cycle to the class on what story ideas the opinion section of the Bark is planning on writing. To prepare for the class-wide presentation; Rosstin, Jack and I select and highlight the top stories of the cycle. During the presentation, I go over a quick summary of the story ideas and why we decided it would be a good idea for the cycle. Section presentations work as a good way to practice public speaking to the Bark publication and help strengthen our editorial process by giving editors and peer-journalists opportunities to build and critique stories.
